The Kindergarten program at Saint Gabriel School is a full day program with recess, nap time (which is 45 - 60 minutes), and also a snack time in the morning.
The Kindergarten has two rooms: One is a regular classroom, meant to introduce and practice new skills. The second room is to reinforce/extend those skills through the use of Learning Centers. Learning Centers consist of Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Art, Listening, and Community/Home Living. Students also have access to a TV/VCR for watching educational and "G" rated movies, and educational computer programs.
The Kindergarten's academic program is based on the State of Connecticut and the Archdiocese of Hartford guidelines and requirements.
The Kindergarten's curriculum includes the following: Religion/Family Life, Reading, Phonics, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Art, Gym, Music, and Computer Science.
The Kindergarten religion program recognizes the uniqueness of each child and instills a sense of belonging to family, home, school, church and community.
The Kindergarten language arts program provides a multi-sensory approach integrating auditory and visual development, including a weekly 40 minute meeting with the 3rd grade in which the students are paired with a third grader to read stories and practice newly learned reading skills each week. Together, the students create a book as a culminating project.
The Kindergarten Math program develops number skills and concepts using a multi-sensory approach.
The Kindergarten Social studies program defines and expands the family and community and introduces the children to the world around them.
The Kindergarten program also includes 40 minutes a week for each of the following specials: Art, Physical Education, Music, Library, and Computer Science.
