Seventh Grade Saint Gabriel School - Mr. Conlin is the Homeroom Teacher

Subjects the 7th Grade students cover during the year are:

  • Students are required to write both an autobiography and biography. They are assigned research papers that will expose students to primary and/or secondary sources. From research papers, students will extract major facts and present them to the rest of their class in oral presentations.

    With a focus on writing, students will learn paragraph composition including: descriptive, persuasive, and narrative paragraphs. They will also demonstrate their writing abilities in short essays, not only in English, but also reading tests.

    Grammar mechanics will be fine tuned with a focus on punctuation, capitalization, sentence structure, parts of speech, and diagramming simple sentences.

    Original poetry and short stories will be created throughout the year.

    Vocabulary and dictionary usage is stressed in Reading and Language Arts (English) through specialized vocabulary and word lists, which are derived from each novel read.

  • Basal Reader is used for examples of biographies, short stories, and plays. Novels read during the year are: Let the Circle be Unbroken, The Red Badge of Courage, Where the Red Fern Grows, and Night (All novels subject to change)

  • The 7th grade math is divided into two levels, "A" and "B", in order to focus more on each individual's needs and obtain a better "one on one" learning environment.

  • Seventh grade studies Life Science with a focus on cells, levels of organization, reproduction, heredity, adaptions, survival, relationships and interactions within ecosystems.

  • Health - 'Teen Health Course 2' ©2003
  • Health classes meet once a week on Friday. Topics include Body systems, Communication skills, Family health issues and risk factors for diseases.

  • The program builds on the vocabulary, studies verbs and develops reading and writing skills, ties in culture from various Spanish - speaking countries.

  • Religion/Family Life - 'Religion - Blest are We: The Story of Jesus@2005
  • This course meets five days a week. In seventh grade religion we will focus on Jesus Christ--especially his life, his teachings and his presence in the Church today. We will be looking at the New Testament and reviewing the sacraments. The class will be looking at Jesus through the eyes of history. We will also be studying the Family Life text on a weekly basis. This text focuses on family communication, and the teenager's responsibility to make good choices. Topics include gender stereotyping, the dangers of alcohol and drugs and the proper use of God's gift of sexuality.

  • Geography - World Geography Prentice Hall ©2000
  • This course meets three times per week. The course is designed so that the students will meet the Geography for Life: National Geography Standards. In grade 7, the following areas are covered:

    1. The physical and human geography, which includes climate and vegetation, population and culture and resources and land use.
    2. United States
    3. Canada
    4. Latin America

  • American History - Call to Freedom Beginnings to 1877 Holt ©2003
  • This course meets four times per week. Subjects studied are United States History from the colonization of the New World to the Civil War. Students will develop a feel for the people and the events that have made us the Nation we are today. The class will touch on many skills, including map skills, reading and comprehension skills, language arts, and critical thinking skills. The following areas will be covered:

    1. Colonization of the Americans
    2. Life in the English Colonies
    3. The War for Independence
    4. Governing the new nation
    5. Civil War and Reconstruction
