Student Council
Saint Gabriel School has a student council. Students for the 5th - 8th grade may vote and/or run for an office. The student council will work throughout the year on various community projects.
The following students are on the Student Council for the 2007 - 2008 school year.
Mr. White is the Advisor to the Student Council.
Middle School Homework Club
The Middle School teachers would like to offer the students an opporunity to stay at school each afternoon from 2:30 - 3:30 to do their homework. Our goal is to provide students with a quiet place to work, to get help if needed and to have a chance to complete their homework. The Homework Club will run from Monday - Thursday each week. Each teacher will work a different day and students will report to the Club classroom at dismissal time with all of their necessary materials. Students need to understand that this is a working environment and not a place for socializing. They will not be allowed to bring drinks or snacks to the Homework Club. Students will need to communicate their intention to stay with their parents. Students who do not have a way to get home will need to join the afterschool program, and will be charged for their time. All Middle School students are welcome to participate in the Homework Club. However, students who need to serve a detention for late homework or for any other reason, cannot use the Homework Club on that day. They will need to serve their detention with the appropriate teacher. As stated in the homework policy, a phone call will be made to a parent to inform you of a detention.
The weekly schedule will be as follows:The Club will offically begin on Tueday, October 2. There will not be a Homework Club on the days of Faculty Meetings. Please Check the monthly calendar for any changes.
Cheerleading
The Cheerleaders are a group of students who cheer for the basketball team at St. Gabriel School! To join you must be in grades 5-8.
Mrs. Smith is the Advisor to the Cheerleaders.
School Band
Instrumental music instruction at St. Gabriel School is provided through Future Musicians Inc., who has provided successful music education programs for private and parochial schools since 1975. Lessons are offered to students in grades 4-8 on flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, trombone and percussion. As students progress on their instruments, additional instruments may be chosen. Once a week students receive a half hour lesson in a small group. Students are grouped by ability and as progress is made, lesson groups are altered. Lessons are scheduled on a rotating basis during the day to avoid interference with the same subject matter each week. During the first year students are part of the Cadet Band, which rehearses during recess. Upon completing one year of study, most students are promoted to Advanced Band. Advanced Band is comprised of students in their 2nd - 5th year of playing and it meets for 45 minutes immediately following school dismissal. The St. Gabriel Advanced and Cadet Bands perform for school functions such as Grandparent's Day, and the Christmas and Spring concerts. Once students complete Book I, they are invited to audition for the FMI Eastern Regional Band. This higher-level band has full instrumentation and meets during October with a culminating concert. Participants of the three FMI Regional bands audition in January for placement into one of the three FMI All State Bands. Students are placed according to their audition results into the All State Concert, Symphonic, and/or Jazz Band. These three bands hold a culminating concert at Central CT State University. Additionally these bands travel to New York and perform at Lincoln Center and also perform outside at the Old State House in Hartford. Last year, 2/3 of the St. Gabriel Advanced Band participated in the All State program.
The school library is open during school hours. Each class has one forty minute class in the library. The library also has a media center with five computers, a printer, and a scanner.
Computer Club
The Computer Club is an after school activity that runs for two sessions. One session meets in the fall and one session meets in the spring. It is opened to all students in grades 4-8. Students must sign up for a seven week session. The club meets in the computer classroom from 2:30 - 3:45. In the computer club students will be able to take apart a computer, learn how to create a web page, design multimedia presentations, and make movies!
